TEAMING UP WITH OUR ALMA MATER

TEAMING UP WITH OUR ALMA MATER

Jan 18, 2023

The River Bookshop is a huge fan of book clubs. The very best bookshops host a number of them. We think there is real merit in a group of people getting together to discuss a book they have read and expressing their opinions, likes, dislikes, and personal experience. Since our inception, the River Bookshop has hosted a book club on the last Tuesday of the month, led by bookseller Cindy. This month’s book is Embers by Richard Wagamese, on January 31 at 7:00 pm.

In addition to that book club, we're announcing something new. As University of Windsor alumni, Lead Bookseller Meghan Desjardins and Richard Peddie are very pleased to announce that we are teaming up with the University of Windsor Alumni Association to host a second monthly book club entitled “Alumni Meet-Ups” that will usually be held the third Wednesday of every month. Alumni Meet-Ups will be a series of monthly chats on a wide variety of relevant and interesting topics.

Our first 2023 meeting will actually be held next week, on January 25 at 6:30 pm in the Hole in the Wall event space over the River Bookshop. The topic will be “Heritage Preservation in Your Community.” On the 25th, author Meg Reiner will discuss her book Heritage Buildings of Amherstburg. Then, panelists Reiner, Richard Peddie and Dorian Moore—sessional instructor, Visual Arts and the Built Environment, University of Windsor—will discuss the importance of heritage properties and the challenges they face. We are delighted that Amherstburg mayor Michael Prue will moderate the discussion.

Many of you have already purchased Meg’s book and would enjoy the discussion. If you haven’t yet come to one of our events to learn more about the importance of heritage properties, we recommend this one. UofW alumni & friends are welcome, including anyone who enjoys discussing a great book and an interesting topic.

The River Bookshop believes that book clubs are important for an effective community hub. Look for more news on our clubs in the next few weeks.

The event is free, but we ask that you register here. This allows us to measure attendance and to connect with you if anything changes. In-person seating is limited. Attendees wishing to attend virtually will be sent the ZOOM link separately.

Books are magic, and book clubs are another way to enjoy that magic.

Meghan and Richard

Please Note:
The River Bookshop is a heritage building that was built in 1887. The main floor was restored to be completely accessible. The second floor, the Hole in the Wall event space (where our audio-visual technology is located), is not accessible. To make events accessible, guests can attend these events online via Zoom.
